Diagnosis of Asthma

A doctor my diagonose asthma by listening to the wheezing in the lungs during breathing. The doctor can also infer asthma from the classic symptoms described by a patient.

The following are the classic symptoms of asthma. The severity of these symptoms varies from person to person.

1. Dry cough

2. Shortness of breath

3. Coughing

4. Chest tightness

A patient may be asked to take a spirometry test that measures air movement in and out of the lungs. The results from the spirometry test can help the doctor to determine the severity of asthma attack if any. If the wheezing is reduced by using bronchodilators, that can tell if the patient has asthma.
